What Is an Automotive Engine?

At its core, an automotive engine is a machine that converts fuel into mechanical energy, which then propels your car forward. Most modern cars use internal combustion engines (ICEs), where fuel burns inside the engine’s cylinders. However, electric motors and hybrid systems are also becoming more common as the industry shifts toward sustainability.

How an ICE Engine Works: The Basics

An internal combustion engine typically works through a four-stroke cycle:

  1. Intake – The engine draws in air and fuel.
  2. Compression – The piston compresses the mixture, preparing it for ignition.
  3. Combustion (Power Stroke) – A spark plug ignites the compressed mixture, creating an explosion that forces the piston down.
  4. Exhaust – The used gases exit through the exhaust valve.

This process happens thousands of times per minute, producing the power needed to move your vehicle. It should be noted that two stroke engines also exist (suck/squeeze and bang/blow), but are generally reserved for common around the house power equipment and dirtbikes/mopeds.

This So now that you know the basic principles of ICE, how then do we get useful power to propel the car forward? The car has thousands of components, but below is the main parts that contribute to power ...

  • Cylinders & Pistons: These are where the magic happens—facilitates the combustion that powers your car.
  • Crankshaft: Converts the up-and-down motion of the pistons into rotational energy.
  • Camshaft & Valves: Control the intake of air/fuel and the release of exhaust gases.
  • Spark Plugs: Ignite the air-fuel mixture in each cylinder.
  • Fuel System: Delivers fuel to the engine precisely and efficiently. Note, carburetors are an older method of fuel delivery where it intakes air that goes through a small nozzle, initiating the Venturi effect, which then causes a low pressure area which draws fuel in via a floating chamber. The fuel then atomizes with the air creating a combustible vapour.

Types of Automotive Engines

  1. Inline Engines (I4, I6): Cylinders arranged in a straight line. Efficient and common in everyday vehicles.
  2. V-Style Engines (V6, V8): Cylinders are arranged in a "V-Shape", providing more power with a signature growl. Often used for motorcycles as it is space-efficient.
  3. Boxer Engines: Flat layout with horizontally opposed cylinders. Used by companies like Subaru and Porsche.
  4. Rotary Engine: Compact and lightweight, though less common today.

Emerging Alternatives: Electric & Hybrid Motors

With the rise of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids, the definition of an “automotive engine” is evolving.

  • EVs use electric motors powered by batteries, offering instant torque, fewer moving parts, and zero tailpipe emissions. The two main parts of an electric motor in EVs are the rotor and the stator; the motor itself operates on the "direct drive" principle. This simply means instead of a multi-stage gear transmission like with ICE, it relies on a single step reduction gear to match the high rpm of the motor with the low rpm of the wheels. 

Hybrids combine traditional engines with electric assistance to improve efficiency.

Keeping Your Engine Healthy

Routine maintenance ensures your engine runs smoothly for years:

  • Consistent oil changes
  • Air/Fuel Filter Replacements
  • Checking spark plugs and ignition systems
  • Using appropriate fuel for engine or better
